Philippine Journal of Development

Guidelines in the preparation of articles

Articles on economic development, business, political dynamics, public administration, foreign relations and other related subjects, which are policy-oriented and may or may not explicitly have a bearing on the Philippines, will be considered for publication in the Journal.

All contributions are refereed for quality and relevance based on the Institute’s publication guidelines. Time normally allowed for the review process is two months. All submitted articles must be original and unpublished. Papers that are simultaneously being considered in other journals may not be accepted. Such simultaneous consideration must therefore be brought to the attention of the editorial staff.

Manuscripts must be typed double-space in 8.5 x 11 inches bond paper. Manuscripts should be accompanied by diskettes and an abstract of not more than 500 words. Average length should be from 35 to 40 pages, including tables, charts, figures, and annexes, if any.

Book reviews are also accepted. The theme or topic of the book should fall within the scope of the articles accepted for publication in the Journal. Book reviews must also be typed double-space in 8.5 x 11 inches bond paper and should not exceed 1,500 words. The electronic file of the manuscript must also be submitted.

Spelling and mathematical notation

  • American rather than British spelling is preferred. Webster’s International Dictionary is the standard reference for spelling.

  • Mathematics should be avoided but where unavoidable, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of factors should be written on a single line; thus, for example: a + b = c; dy/dx = B; [(a - b) (c + d)]/(m + n) =  r.

References in text

  • The author-date format without comma in between is used for reference citations in text (e.g., Krugman 1993). Only references cited in the text, tables or figures should appear under “References”.

  • If two or more references by the same author(s) from the same year are cited, these should be listed as …a, …b, and so on; for example, 2000a, 2000b.

  • For multiple author books, the names of the second, third and succeeding authors are designated as “et al.” in text. However, in the reference list, all the names of the authors should be given.

  • Semicolon is used to separate different authors; for example, (Santos 1978, 1979; Bell 1982, 1984; Alcantara 1993). Chronology has precedence over alphabet.

Reference list

  • All references should be arranged in alphabetical order according to author’s (family) name, or, where there is no identifiable author, by the name of the sponsoring body or organization. Place the first and middle initials—with period without space in between—after the family name. For two or more authors, after the senior author’s name, give the names of the other authors by writing first the initials followed by the family name.

  • For successive references by the same author or author team, use a 3-em dash in place of the author’s name. List them in chronological order, according to year of publication.

  • Do not use a 3-em dash when the co-author(s) in the succeeding references is (are) different. Repeat the name(s) then arrange the references in alphabetical order.

  • Book and journal titles should be italicized; title of journal articles, conference/workshop paper, working paper or document should be neither italicized nor set in quotation marks or single inverted commas. All book, journal, article, paper titles should use title capitalization.

  • Electronic sources (databases, online journals, web sites or pages, newsgroups, web or e-mail-based discussion groups and web or e-mail-based newsletters) used as references should also be listed. Sample of the preferred format is given below:

Online document

Author, A. 2000. Title of work. Accessed/retrieved month day, year. Source path.

Online periodical

Author, A. B. Author and C. Author. 2000. Title of article. Title of Periodical xx(xx):xx-xx.
Accessed/retrieved month day, year. Source path.

Six complimentary copies of the Journal and 24 offprint copies of the paper are given to each author whose paper is included in the issue. Where there is more than one author, copies will be divided equally among them. For additional copies, the author(s) may place orders at discounted rates with the editorial staff.

Contributions sent via e-mail are also accepted. First, the abstract may be submitted to the Managing Editor (jliguton@pidsnet.pids.gov.ph). On notification by the Managing Editor that the abstract looks promising, the contributor may forward the full text (with hard copy and diskette) to the Managing Editor.
